Breast Reduction in NYC

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) is a life-changing procedure that removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to create smaller, lighter, and more proportionate breasts. Many women with overly large breasts suffer from chronic pain, discomfort, and self-consciousness, making breast reduction surgery one of the highest-rated plastic surgeries in terms of patient satisfaction.

After surgery, patients often report immediate relief from back, neck, and shoulder pain, improved posture and mobility, and an increase in self-confidence.

Breast Reduction vs. Breast Lift – Which Do You Need?

A breast lift (mastopexy) is often combined with breast reduction to reshape and lift the breasts into a more youthful position.

Breast Reduction Only – Removes excess breast tissue but does not reshape or lift significantly.

Breast Reduction with Lift – Removes excess tissue and lifts sagging breasts for a perkier and more natural shape.

Surgical Techniques for Breast Reduction

This procedure is often recommended for women who require a large amount of breast tissue to be removed and breast contour to be readjusted. The incision is made surrounding the areola, as in the donut lift, with an additional incision made vertically from the lower edge of the areola towards the crease of the breast. Both incisions resemble a lollipop when closed. A lollipop lift can be beneficial for women who want to lift and recontour the breast and alter the size and shape of the areola. The placement of the incisions is also ideal for breast augmentation as no further incisions will be required while performing that stage of the surgery.

Many women who experience the most advanced levels of sagging and excess skin and tissue will elect to have this breast lift procedure performed to correct these issues. This type of breast lift utilizes the incisions from a lollipop cut with an additional incision placed horizontally at the crease of the breast. Although the incisions are placed at inconspicuous locations along the edge of the areola and at the natural crease of the breast, the scars from this type of breast lift surgery may be more noticeable after healing, But this technique can have significant positive results for lifting and enhancing the shape, size, and appearance of the breasts.

Is Breast Reduction Surgery Painful?

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort in the first few days following surgery, but this is easily managed with prescribed pain medication.

To further minimize post-operative pain, Dr. Itay Wiser utilizes an advanced nerve block technique during surgery. This temporarily numbs the surgical area, significantly reducing discomfort for the first 24-48 hours after the procedure. Patients who receive a nerve block often report a smoother, more comfortable recovery with less reliance on pain medication.

📌 Dr. Wiser’s focus on patient comfort ensures that you experience the easiest and most pain-free recovery possible.

Male Breast Reduction – Gynecomastia

While breast reduction surgery is most commonly performed on women, men with enlarged breast tissue (gynecomastia) can also benefit from this life-changing procedure. Gynecomastia, often referred to as “male boobs” or “male fat chest,” is a condition caused by hormonal imbalances, weight fluctuations, or genetics, leading to the overdevelopment of male breast tissue.

Male breast reduction surgery removes excess fat and glandular tissue, restoring a firmer, flatter, and more masculine chest. This procedure can dramatically boost confidence, allowing men to feel more comfortable in fitted clothing, at the gym, or shirtless.

If you’re struggling with excess chest fat or gynecomastia, Dr. Itay Wiser specializes in advanced male breast reduction techniques.

FAQ about Breast Reduction

How Long Does Breast Reduction Surgery Take?

The procedure typically takes 2-4 hours, depending on the amount of tissue removed and whether a breast lift is included.

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort in the first few days, but this is easily managed with prescribed pain medication.

Most patients return to work within 1-2 weeks, depending on the nature of their job. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 4-6 weeks.

Dr. Wiser uses specialized techniques that do not impact future breastfeeding ability, ensuring milk production remains unaffected whenever possible.

If you plan to lose a significant amount of weight, it is best to reach your goal weight before surgery to achieve the best long-term results.

Yes! However, aging, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations can still affect breast shape over time. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps ensure long-lasting results.

In a breast reduction, I reduce the volume of the breast and lift the position of the nipple areolar complex. In a breast lift I only do the latter. You are a candidate for breast reduction if you suffer from heaviness of the breast, skin irritation in the breast folds, and shoulder/back or neck pain, or if you feel that the volume of the breast is too big inside the bra. If you are satisfied with the breast volume while in the bra but the breast is droopy, you are probably a candidate for the breast lift.

No. All stitches used in breast augmentation are internal and dissolvable.

A breast reduction / lift can be done with either a short scar (lollipop) or inverted T scar (anchor).
