Lower Body Lift (Belt Lipectomy): The 360-Degree Solution

A lower body lift, also called a belt lipectomy or circumferential body lift, removes a band of loose skin all the way around the waist in one operation, tightening the abdomen, lifting the buttocks and outer thighs, and smoothing the flanks and lower back. It is the procedure for patients whose weight loss left loose skin around the entire trunk, not the abdomen alone. Dr. Itay Wiser performs lower body lifts in NYC as part of staged plans for patients after major weight loss.

What it addresses in one stage

  • The abdomen: loose skin removed and muscles repaired, as in a tummy tuck.
  • The flanks and lower back: rolls of skin and fat removed.
  • The buttocks: lifted and, where wanted, reshaped with the patient's own tissue.
  • The outer thighs: lifted as the circumferential incision is closed.

The inner thighs and the arms are not part of a lower body lift and are addressed in a later stage; see thigh lift in NYC and arm lift in NYC.

Candidacy

  • Weight stable for twelve months or more; Dr. Wiser's surgical weight optimization program helps you get there and manages GLP-1 medication timing.
  • Good general health, with nutrition (protein, iron, vitamin D, B12) checked after bariatric surgery; see plastic surgery after bariatric surgery.
  • Non-smoker for at least a month before and after; nicotine threatens the long incision.
  • Loose skin around the whole trunk and not only the abdomen; if only the abdomen is loose, a tummy tuck or panniculectomy is the better operation.
  • Realistic expectations about the scar, which circles the waist, and the recovery.

Lower body lift recovery

This is the biggest single after-weight-loss operation, and recovery reflects that. Expect a hospital stay of one to two nights, drains for one to two weeks, a compression garment for several weeks, and help at home for the first week or two. Light activity returns at two to four weeks, desk work at four to six, exercise at six to eight, and the final contour at nine to twelve months as swelling resolves and the scar matures. The scar circles the waist where underwear covers it. Dr. Wiser performs a regional nerve block during surgery and the practice offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy to support healing.

Results

Results are most clearly judged as a staged sequence. The before-and-after gallery includes trunk contouring after major weight loss. The excess skin removal in NYC hub explains how the lower body lift fits with other areas, and body contouring after weight loss is the complete guide. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons' body lift overview describes the procedure in general terms.

Frequently asked questions

What does a lower body lift include?

A circumferential excision around the waist that removes loose skin from the abdomen, flanks, lower back, buttocks and outer thighs in one stage, with the buttocks and thighs lifted and the abdomen tightened. It is the largest single after-weight-loss operation.

Who is a candidate?

Patients who have lost a large amount of weight, held a stable weight for twelve months or more, are in good health and do not smoke, and have loose skin all the way around the trunk, and not only the abdomen.

Is a lower body lift covered by insurance?

It may be covered in many cases, depending on your plan and your individual case; for example, when the abdominal portion meets your plan's criteria for removing an overhanging apron. Our team helps with insurance questions, takes care of the necessary paperwork, and discusses financing options.

How long is recovery?

Longer than any single-area procedure: a hospital stay of one to two nights, drains for one to two weeks, two to four weeks before light activity, four to six before desk work, and six to eight weeks before exercise, with the final contour at nine to twelve months.

Is it better to do the areas separately?

Sometimes. A lower body lift addresses everything in one recovery but is a long operation; separating a tummy tuck from a buttock and outer thigh lift means two shorter operations and two recoveries. Health, the extent of laxity and your schedule decide it.

Plan the trunk as one

At the free virtual consultation Dr. Wiser examines the extent of laxity around your trunk, confirms your weight is stable, and tells you whether one lower body lift or two shorter operations is the safer plan for you.
