Traditional tumescent liposuction loosens fat with fluid and a cannula and suctions it out. VASER liposuction adds an ultrasound step that emulsifies the fat first, which makes it gentler in fibrous areas, allows finer sculpting, and often means less bruising, at a higher cost. For soft areas and straightforward fat removal, results are usually similar. Neither removes loose skin. Dr. Itay Wiser offers both in NYC and explains below which earns its cost for which patient.
Side by side
| Traditional (tumescent) | VASER | |
|---|---|---|
| Fat loosening | Fluid and cannula | Ultrasound energy before suction |
| Fibrous areas (back, male chest, revision) | Harder; more trauma | Easier; gentler |
| Fine definition and hi-def | Limited | Its strength |
| Bruising and swelling | Moderate | Often less |
| Skin contraction | Depends on elasticity | May be slightly better in elastic skin |
| Loose skin | Not treated | Not treated |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Recovery | A few days to a week off work | Similar, sometimes shorter |
How each works
Both begin with tumescent fluid, a dilute solution of local anesthetic and epinephrine that numbs the area and limits bleeding. Traditional liposuction then uses a thin cannula moved through the fat to break it up and suction it. VASER inserts an ultrasound probe first; its energy emulsifies fat cells while sparing nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue, and the liquefied fat is then removed with less mechanical force.
Where VASER earns its cost
- Fibrous areas: the back, the male chest, and any area previously treated.
- Definition: waistline sculpting and abdominal etching.
- Patients who bruise easily or want a gentler recovery.
- Combination with Renuvion for mild laxity.
Where it does not: soft abdominal or thigh fat in a patient with good skin, where traditional liposuction usually gives a similar result for less.
Skin tightening: what each technique can do
Some clinics sell VASER as skin tightening. In elastic skin the contraction may be slightly better than with traditional liposuction; in skin stretched by years at a higher weight neither device tightens anything, and removing fat beneath it makes it hang. If you can lift a loose fold, read excess skin removal in NYC.
A plain recommendation
Choose traditional liposuction for straightforward fat removal in soft areas with elastic skin. Choose VASER liposuction for fibrous areas, fine definition or hi-def work, or if bruising worries you. Choose excision, not either, for loose skin. The liposuction in NYC page covers areas and candidacy.
Frequently asked questions
Is VASER liposuction safer than traditional?
Both are safe in experienced hands. VASER adds an ultrasound step, which carries a small risk of heat injury if used improperly; standard liposuction has no such step. Surgeon experience matters more than the device.
Does VASER give better results?
In fibrous areas and for fine definition, usually yes. In soft areas for straightforward fat removal, results are usually similar.
Is VASER worth the extra cost?
When you need fibrous-area treatment, hi-def sculpting or want less bruising, yes. Otherwise standard liposuction gives the same result for less.
Does either tighten loose skin?
Neither removes loose skin. VASER may improve contraction slightly in already-elastic skin. Loose, hanging skin needs excision.
